New Irish Record Label Says “Think Deep”

One of Ireland’s most successful and longest-running music communities, Deep House Network, has announced the foundation of its own record label, Deep House Network Records (DHN Records). The label’s first release “Sound Scapes: Ireland” is scheduled for release on September 2003. It showcases new material from leading Irish artists Fish Go Deep, Aruba, and Fusty. To celebrate, deep house heads can preview the new material during the Irish launch party at City Limits, Cork City, Ireland Saturday, August 9th, featuring performances from Fish Go Deep and Fusty. Don’t worry if you can’t make it, online preview snippets are also available from www.dhnrecords.com.

The Sound Scapes series of EPs reflects the many ‘personalities’ deep house has assumed in different regions around the world and acknowledges the contribution each individual town, city, or country has made to the global deep house family. The Sound Scapes series will encompass all deep house hotspots from established cities in the US to emerging locations, such as Ireland and South Africa.

Next up for DHN Records, the second release in the Sound Scapes series focuses on Scottish Deep House, mixing established artists and hot talent, Calum Walker (Fresh ‘n’ Low & Solar House), The Clyde Built Project (Deep Freeze Recordings) and Iain McPherson (Funky Transport). From Scotland, the Sound Scapes series visits La belle France and then goes transatlantic to Chicago, Toronto, San Fran, and LA, returning via South Africa and the UK. Wherever the beats stay deep, we’ll be there!

“It’s a real honour securing Fish Go Deep for our first release. They’ve been a big inspiration, not only to everyone at DHN, but also to Fusty and Aruba, who also feature on the first of the Sound Scapes releases.” said Aine Guiney, label manager at DHN Records. “It’s a great privilege to unite two generations of Irish house music on a single international record, and we’ve no doubt these artists will be a huge influence on Irish producers to come”. “We couldn’t be more excited at Deep House Network to be releasing this music,” agreed co-founders Derek Hyland and Cillian Joy. “For years we’ve been at the forefront of building a global deep house community, so this is the next logical step for us, and it’s an exhilarating one”.

The Tracks, The Artists

A1) Fish Go Deep – “Matrix”

Since their seminal first release “Let’s Go Back”, the pioneers of deep house in Ireland have only gone forward, earning international acclaim by producing consistently brilliant tracks on internationally renowned labels such as Chez, Imperial Dub, Brique Rouge and i! Records. Warm organs, gently hypnotic vocals, and sweet percussion all combine with that signature Greg and Shane style and precision.

A2) Aruba – “The Theme From Mr. Cool”

Founder of Elevation Recordings, Darren Nugent/Aruba has remixed Fish Go Deep, Jordan Fields (Caro), Yann Fontaine, Fresh ‘n’ Low (with Shawn Ward), Vernon & Dacosta, Mettle Music and Freestyle Man. Aruba is also an established producer with tracks including “How Low Can U Go?” (Exun) and “The Comeback” on The Rurals’ Peng label. One to get dancefloor repairmen taking on extra staff, “The Theme From Mr. Cool” is a deep progressive outing with a snarling vocal that is curiously both scary and infectious. With subtle undertones of Underworld at their best, this stomper just keeps on building. Tough as nails, some old school acidy synths add to this beautifully organised chaos.

B1) Fusty – “Blackens As It Dries”

A live jazz/funk band hailing from Cork, they profess that they are “heavily influenced by the music and atmosphere of their favourite club night Sweat at Sir Henrys”. Fusty have been making serious waves of late, winning the approval of house fans and live music fans alike. ‘Blackens As It Dries’ is a dark and melancholic “deeper than deep” number. Barry Fitzgerald’s haunting vocal creeps under your skin, adding an introspective mood to the EP. Live drums, congas, keys and guitar all combine to produce a fresh, organic sound, while showcasing the musical talents that make these guys stand out from the crowd.

B2) Fish Go Deep – “Matrix (Dub)”

Does exactly what it says on the sleeve, is a softer, warmer, more stripped-down version of the original.

What Is Deep House Network?

From humble beginnings in 1999, Deep House Network has gone from strength to strength, and is now recognised as the premier source of deep house information in the world. The brainchild of two Irishmen (Derek Hyland and Cillian Joy), the original intention was merely to provide some sort of Web presence for the local house music scene. “Irish Deep House”, as it was then called, provided local information, mixes, and gig details. Such was its success, it couldn’t be kept a secret for long, and soon www.deephousenetwork.com was unleashed onto the unsuspecting underground world. Since then, Deep House Network has grown with contributors from around the globe, over 7,000 registered members in over 100 countries, and an average of over 900,000 hits from over 30,000 visitors every month.

Deep House Network exists for those of like mind all around the world who enjoy their music with a speed limit – be it deep, soulful, vocal, jazzy, techy – whatever! It’s a venue where party people gather to discuss, listen, meet, interact, and unite for good music! A website by music fans, for music fans, the Deep House Network is a labour of love for each and every contributor worldwide, and for those who seek it out. Over the past years, Deep House Network has interviewed, reviewed, and provided label profiles, juicy gossip, articles, club info, release info, chat, mixes and everything thing else in any way related to this thing we call house.

One of the primary aims of the Deep House Network website is building a global community. Most countries from A-Z are represented, from Afghanistan (3 members) to Zimbabwe (2 members), encompassing USA (2130 members), UK (810 members), and Ireland (1565 members). DHN provides a deep house source that keeps you informed with up-to-the-minute music and info and as an added bonus as this is an online forum, everything is free.

Deep House Network is now entering a new phase of development with the foundation and launch of its own record label, DHN Records. Under the guidance of Cillian Joy and Derek Hyland (co-founders) and Aine Guiney (label manager and co-founder), DHN Records will showcase the very finest music on offer today. To achieve this, DHN Records is creating a melting pot for the global deep house community by showcasing and fusing music from all over the world, be it established house hotbeds like New York and San Francisco, or emerging lesser-known house locations, such as South Africa and Ireland. Each release in the Sound Scapes series will have a different geographical focus allowing you to enjoy and sample that, which is at its epicentre, global deep house.
